Rod Liddle:The man Alex Higgins doesn't want

Not the snooker player, some teacher guy has got it into his head that Rod Liddle, journalist, apparently offered the job of editor for the Independent, doesn't deserve the job. Well thats fine, you say, everyone has the right to object and I for one would support him in his endeavours. His right to demonstrate his opposition (through the medium of Facebook and other social networking sites, no doubt, the middle-classes new soapbox). I even agree with his reasoning, to a point although I do think Mr Liddles comments have been more about stirring the shit than him actually believing some of the stuff he has said. I just feel that this kind of thing is more due a letter to the editor type stuff. Let him have the job. He may cock it up royally (the Today programme). This whole thing just seems a bit wrong. I mean, where does it stop?
Surprising, really, when there are, or were, so many other things that people can get organised about. Some guy suffers the death penalty in China. Where was everyone then? Twittering that Rage against the Machine should get to number one.
The Independent needs a kick up the arse. This is providing it. The best thing the new owner can do now is make him editor. The publicity has been priceless.

  1. of course its not 'ok' and I would have hoped that the first comment on this subject would be from someone who actually read what I had written and maybe had the kahunas to not stay anonymous, but hey whatever....A lot of what Alex Higgins has written (after a little search) is bang on blog wise and his ideals are pretty much solid, my issue is this. Rod Liddle is just an odious little character who is being offered a job preciseley to invoke this kind of response. The oxygen given to this is only going to convert into more paper sales whether he has the job or not. It is not at any level the same as when we were demonstrating against the fascists or against tuition fees or the poll tax. And if everyone has suddenly got it into their heads to become vocal about racism or misogyny in newspapers why aren't we demonstrating against The Sun everyday?
